Two iconic Marshalls - which one would you choose? Welcome to the show! A very simple proposition today - take two classic Marshalls, give ‘em a hammering and see what’s what. Both amps are modern reissues: a 2245 JTM45 and a 1987x ‘Plexi’. They are both non-master volume amps that you will hear through the same cabinet. No attenuators, no direct sounds, no cab modelling, no post EQ or plugins – just the amps, speakers and microphones. Big thanks to our mate Jake Loosemore for selling us the JTM45! Questions arising… How are you switching the amps? With a Radial Headbone VT, remote switched via TheGigRig G3 - links below What is the speaker cabinet? A Marshall 1960AX 412 with Celestion G12M Greenback speakers Why two mics? There’s an Austrian Audio OC18 and an AKG D190e. I recorded them both and mixed them to taste. (Mick here, hello). There’s also a goodly dose of stereo room mics in the mix - 2 x AKG C414XL. Why no FX loop discussion for the 1987x? I've recently been given the challenge to get a Marshall Plexi tone on a Boss Katana and to compare it to the real thing. I'm not one to shy away from a challenge so here is the video. In this Video, I plug the Marshall SV20 Plexi and a Boss Katana MK1 100 watt head through a Kahayan Amp switcher into a Divided By 13 Cab. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

In this video, out of sheer boredom, I decided to see what my 1974 Marshall MKII sounded like on 10, so I brought it outside on my deck. Hoping the neighbors wouldn't call the cops or the fire department, my friend "The Skipper" and I decided to lug this entire stack outside. Comparing the Marshall Origin 50h to the 50 watt Marshall Plexi (the1987x) These amps get loud. How loud? You'll find out in the video. How good do they sound? Can the Origin compare to the Plexi? About a year ago I compared the Origin 20 head to the 1987x. Now that was a bit of an unfair comparison in terms of volume, so I thought I'd put that right by comparing these amps. It took much longer than I'd originally hoped, but better late than never. So one year later, here it is, the Marshall tube amp shootout, the Marshall Origin 50 head versus the Marshall 1987x Plexi. A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe. A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab. A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset. A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay. An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar. For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

In this episode of Vox Friendly Pedals, we are looking at the Plexi Crunch from NUX. I've had multiple requests to review affordable pedals in this series, so I reached out to NuX and asked if they had anything for us to check out. They sent three pedals, and this is the first one we will check out. Marshall in a box type pedals are very popular with Vox owners. There are a lot of great boutique options out there, and it is nice to know that there are also affordable alternatives too. I'll be testing the Plexi Crunch with a Wampler Belle, as well as showcase the range of it's controls as well as demo some setting examples. In this video I demonstrate my 1969 Uni-Fuzz played through a vintage 1974 Marshall "Plexi" MKII. The sound is absolutely insane! But in a good way!. Check out the crazy tones that come out of this vintage pedal and amp combination!
The all-new Mid Boost circuit switch, never featured on any previous Wampler Plexi style pedal, creates a powerful throaty tube-like boost by tweaking several gain stages of the circuit at once. This was not an attempt at dialing in a specific artist or player tone but rather just a more generic preset that could work in a number of different live and studio scenarios. I did 5 snapshots for this one ranging from Push to Lead and adding in a Lead with delay and also a lead with a half-cocked Wah pedal as a little bonus. I really hope you enjoy the video and preset.
