First, you can pick an accent color from your wallpaper, You can also opt into the breeze classic theme, which will apply the accent color to the window title bars as well. You can choose to tint all colors using your accent color, so you get the same hue everywhere. The second big change is the floating panels. Panels on KDE used to be stuck against a screen edge, but no longer! You can now make them float above the screen edge they sit on, in the "More options" button when editing the plasma panel. When applying a global theme, you now get to pick which parts you want to change: you don't have to apply the theme in bulk. Another good thing for people who like having more consistency, is the integration of GNOME applications: headerbars will have a border radius more consistent with the Breeze look and feel, and the menus look a bit more native as well. First, if you're using a laptop that supports power profiles, you'll get a better looking pop-up in the system tray, with icons to reflect each profile. The user switcher applet also has a nicer look, with a picture of the currently logged in user, and the pop-up when clicking that applet now looks nicer as well, with more spacing. The pop-up menu for copying the date to the clipboard, in various formats has also been revamped to be more legible. First is touch mode. KDE Plasma has a tablet mode that was toggled automatically when the system detected that you were using a touchscreen only. Now, you can decide to toggle it on and off yourself Still on that note, you now get the ability to do gestures from the screen's edge, basically like hot corners. Swiping 4 fingers down on the touchpad will open the Overview, with your open windows, virtual desktops, and a search bar, that was the big new feature for plasma 5.24. Swiping 4 fingers up will bring an overview of all your virtual desktops, basically the desktop grid, and swiping 4 fingers left or right will move to the next or previous workspace. Other small changes include the ability to select a non native resolution for your display on Wayland , you can now see the frequency your wifi network uses if your network uses both 2.4 and 5Ghz, and the Krunner spell checker action now detects the language you're using and tells you if the spelling is correct. Discover now can display the permissions that flatpak apps use. The App Page also has been overhauled, with instant access to the license of an app, the size on disk, or the version, and it can now tell you when an app has been uninstalled but still has some data on disk. The sidebar will also show all subcategories that were previously located in the Applications submenu, so space is better used, and you're not wasting clicks. Finally, proprietary apps will now have a warning you can display by clicking a small icon next to the license name, to warn you that this app might do weird things, or collect data.

I applied a bunch of tweaks to it, from using Latte Dock to achieve a look and feel I liked, to changing the widget theme, the position of window controls, making windows appear centered, and other small tweaks here and there. If you want to achieve a similar look, you can follow a video from linux Scoop, I left a link in the description below. I didn't apply everything he did there, I mainly took the Latte Dock and plasma themes. Now that this is out of the way, let's begin with what I liked about KDE Plasma. 🤍 ## What I liked Apart from completely changing the layout, the number of small things you can change is just amazing: from how the task manager looks and behaves, to which notification icons you want to see and when, or the clock style, you can really change everything you want. I also enjoy the widget system, that you can add to your desktop. I added my Video folder, and a few system monitoring ones,, but that's just the tip of the iceberg here. There are hundreds of widgets you can download from the Plasma, let's call it "store" for lack of a better word. It was nice to rediscover notification icons, especially how they've been integrated in plasma. They all feel part of the same interface, which is rare. Usually, you get a disjointed collection of icons of varying shapes, sizes and colors, but here, they're all looking nice and similar, and I must admit I had missed them quite a lot on elementary OS. Having a full-featured menu is also very refreshing. It's not just a list of apps, or categories, you also get access to your favorite folders, your recent files history, and, more importantly, it has file search. Another thing that I missed, is KDE Connect. I used it on elementary OS, but there is no way to really integrate it, especially since the elementary OS notification system doesn't really support actionable notifications, so there was no way to answer messages, or share files, so it was a glorified remote control. ## What I don't like Of course, not everything is roses and rainbows. There are things that I don't really like about KDE as a desktop environment. The default theme, in light mode, is pretty bland and looks a bit old, especially the buttons. I'm using the daark theme which kinda resolves the issue, but the default applications theme really needs an update, in my opinion. My main issue here is with applications. The default suite of applications in KDE is very inconsistent. On the one hand, you have apps that have really simple defaults, and a lot of power under the hood if you need it, like Dolphin. On the other hand, you have applications that really want you to see every single feature, panel, and option available, right out of the box, like the Calendar. There also seem to be a less sizable community developing KDE apps as on GNOME or elementary OS. A lot of the apps are pretty old, and look it, like Korganizer, or Kmail. I couldn't find a todo list application along the lines of Getting Things GNOME or Planner. I couldn't find an equivalent to Audacity for the KDE desktop. Of course, you can always install non-KDE apps on KDE, and that's what I did, with the GIMP, Planner, or Audacity. And that's where KDE grabs the advantage again: it integrates GTK apps a lot better than GNOME integrates Qt apps. The fact that you can choose any theme you want for GTK apps under KDE is great, because it means these things will look a lot better integrated, and not feel so alien. Using KDE apps on GNOME or Elementary OS is a weird experience, as they really don't look or feel native, but GTK apps on KDE feel just at home. Now I praised the avalanche of settings before, and I'm not going to apologize for it, but it's also a bit of a hassle sometimes to find a specific thing you're looking for.

Visit 🤍 for a 100$ credit on your new Linode account! I'm continuing my tour of the state of the various mobile versions of popular desktop environments, and it's time to take a look at Plasma Mobile, the version of KDE tailored for smartphones, and touch screens. Let's see how it's advanced and how it works Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 ## Plasma Mobile Plasma mobile looks very similar to an android experience: you've got your shortcuts, with a favorites bar on the bottom, and wiping up opens the app drawer, with all your installed applications. You can then long press these app icons to drag them to the main screen, and move them around, creating your own shortcut page. Creating a shortcut doesn't remove the app from the drawer, just like on Android. The main difference seems to be that you only get one page, and you can't drag apps to the right to create another screen. If you've used Android in the past, it's going to be a super familiar experience, down the fixed buttons at the bottom of the screen. The central one, with the plasma logo, brings you back to your home screen, hiding all open applications. The square on the left is the multitasking button, letting you see all your applications as small cards, that you can select, or close. Finally, the cross, on the right, is only active when you have an app opened. Tapping that will close the app completely, so it won't be in the multitasking menu anymore. As usual on most phone operating systems, you also get a top bar with the cellar signal strength, the date, and the various connections to wifi, bluetooth, plus the battery life. If you slide from the top to the bottom from this top bar, you get the usual quick toggles, and the notifications, just like you'd get on any other mobile OS. You can also long press on the homescreen, to change wallpapers. You get a short list of the ones that are installed, and a the familiar "Get new..." button, that works the same as on the regular desktop version KDE plasma: it opens a library of wallpapers that you can download in one click. You can also add widgets to your home screen, although the selection is more limited than what you get on the desktop, out of the box. Here again, you can download new ones and stick them where you want. ## Applications Plasma mobile comes with a bunch of applications preinstalled. You have your phone dialer, an address book, the usual calculator, a clocks app, a calendar and a beautiful weather app, a pretty nice looking audio player. The web browser is called Angelfish, and it's alright, if not the fastest thing I've ever used. Then you get a host of utilities: a file manager called Index, which works fine once you understand how to select items and interact with them, a video player, a PDF and document viewer, which is Okular, the same app you'll find on desktop KDE, a voice recorder, a terminal, and multiple chat apps, like Neochat, which is a matrix client, Spacebar, the SMS client that I couldn't get to start a new conversation, and telegram. You also have Koko, the image viewer, Megapixels, the camera app, Nota and Buho, 2 note taking applications, and Psensor, a temperature monitor. ## Discover Now, of course, there is a way to get more apps onto the phone, using Discover, Plasma's app store. The app itself works really well on mobile, with an adapted user interface. it lets you download updates to your applications and your whole system, and search for new applications, or add-ons. Unfortunately, the same issue applies here as on Phosh, which is there is no way to know if an app will work well on smartphones, or not. The app pages on Discover also lack some information: you don't get mobile screenshots, even from apps that support the mobile form factor, and you don't get any version history that I could find. ## Settings Now, any tour of a KDE Plasma desktop wouldn't be complete without a tour of the settings, and there are a few to look at. You get the aforementioned online accounts, letting you configure for example a Google or Nextcloud account easily, and the usual audio, bluetooth, cellular and hotspots settings, but you also get tons of personalisation options, including the colors of the interface, the icons, and the plasma style. You can also extensively configure the keyboard.

And then, once your layout suits you, all you have to do is drag a window while holding Shift, and your window will automatically occupy the tiling zone it's sitting above. The widgets and tools have received so many improvements that even in this lengthy section, I can't list them all. First, Krunner got a, update to surface more relevant search results. When hovering over widgets, they'll tell you what you can expect if you middle click them. The tooltips have also been greatly improved. The calendar widget now also supports the Hebrew calendar. The battery monitor shows the status of connected devices, the media applet now has 2 layouts, one for horizontal panels, and one for vertical panels, with the album art only. The color picker can now show up to 9 colors, and clicking a color will automatically copy it to the clipboard, with a notification. The weather widget can now display the temperature in the task bar. Folder view now lets you show hidden folders, pop up notes will make links clickable by default, and Kickoff now supports separators in the menu. The wallpaper list should be much faster, changing wallpapers now uses a transition animation. Floating panels will be automatically de floated when a window touches them, and they'll use less padding and less space in that defloated mode. The breeze theme now has an outline around windows in dark mode, which makes them more easy to parse at a glance, trying to use a VPN will prompt you to install the relevant plugin. Plasma now supports high resolution scrolling under wayland, and they now support content types, which lets the compositor adjust the display's refresh rate depending on what you're doing. Fractional scaling is also now natively supported under Wayland. When sharing your screen on wayland, the window picker will now have thumbnails to let you decide what you want to share. And there's also a new setting to let Xwayland application access global shortcuts. Plasma revamped multi monitor support, so all panels, windows, wallpapers, and widgets are saved per monitor, and restored when a monitor is plugged back in. Next are flatpak permissions. They have their own new settings page, that lets you review what applications have access to, and give them more permissions, or remove some. Discover will now show more flatpak permissions on application pages. The homepage has received a new look. The "all applications" button is also now back in the sidebar, and when you're searching for something, if nothing is available, you'll get a message and a button to search the whole store.

KDE Plasma 5.25 is the 27th edition of Plasma desktop that brings significant changes that include dynamic accent colour, floating panel, new wallpaper, more gesture support and many such features. Here, you can read details about the KDE Plasma 5.25 features in our round-up post. If you are running an earlier version of KDE Plasma via KDE Neon Linux Distribution, this is how you can upgrade to the latest version. How to Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.25 Firstly, the upgrade size is around 40% higher compared to Plasma 5.24. The KDE Plasma 5.25 upgrade size in KDE Neon is close to 1 GB on my test machine. Second, make sure to close all the running applications before you start the upgrade process. The KDE Neon upgrade process is generally stable and never failed me. But if you want to be extra cautious and have valuable data, you may want to take a backup of those. But again, I believe it’s unnecessary, in my opinion. Steps for the upgrade process In KDE Neon, open Discover and click on Fetch Updates. Wait until the updates are downloaded. You can verify whether Plasma 5.25 is available via the Discover upgrade package list. Once you have verified, click on the ‘Update All’ button in the Discover window at the top-right. Alternatively, you can run the below commands from the terminal and start the upgrade process in KDE Neon. sudo apt update sudo pkcon update Restart the system after the upgrade process is complete. And after reboot, you should see the brand new KDE Plasma 5.25 welcomes you. Upgrading KDE Plasma in Kubuntu 22.04 and Fedora 36 For Kubuntu 22.04 users, you will not get 5.25 for its lifetime because it is a Long Term Support (LTS) release. Hence, KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS would remain for its entire LTS life cycle. In addition, Kubuntu 22.10 should feature the KDE Plasma 5.25 when released in October 2022. The famous backports PPA may not get the proper backport updates for an LTS version. However, you can verify when the PPA is refreshed and may follow the below commands for further updates. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get full-upgrade Fedora 36 users should receive KDE Plasma 5.25 during the first point release due next month. Finally, Arch Linux users can update via the above methods once the packages are ready. It’s currently in the Arch testing repo. Post Upgrade Feedback I ran the upgrade process on a virtual machine with a fresh KDE Neon with KDE Plasma 5.24 installed. The upgrade process went smooth, with no surprises or errors. Well, it never failed for me to date. However, the server was a little busy; hence it took some time to upgrade. The upgrade time entirely depends on your internet connection and KDE servers. In general, it should be completed within 30 minutes. The first restart after the upgrade went fine and did not take much time. Performance-wise, I felt it’s a little smooth over the prior releases, thanks to several bug fixes and under-the-hood performance optimizations. So, overall, you can safely upgrade if you are in KDE Neon. And wait for the packages for Ubuntu and Fedora stable releases. Enjoy the brand new KDE Plasma! #kdeplasma #kde #kdeneon #kubuntu #opensuse Todays Video - How to Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.25 from 5.24!

KDE Plasma 5.25 serves as the follow-up to KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS, last year’s sizeable and well-received long-term support update. Although the new update isn’t an LTS it does boast over 400 bug fixes and a number of interesting new features that users will be keen to try. So without any further waffle, let’s look at 5 of the best new features in KDE Plasma 5.25. KDE Plasma 5.25: 5 Best Changes 1. Auto Accent Colours Find it hard to settle on an accent colour to use throughout the Plasma desktop? If so, why not let the system do it for you? Automatic adaptive personalisation is a major part of modern mobile user experiences and thanks to KDE devs it’s now part of the KDE Plasma 5.25 desktop too. Yes, Plasma 5.25 offers an option to use an accent colour algorithmically-derived from the hues of your current desktop wallpaper. Every time you change your wallpaper you change the accent colour too. Simple and automatic. It even works with wallpaper slideshows. That said, this feature is optional (i.e. it’s not turned on by default) so you do need to go out of your way to benefit — something I reckon a lot of users will be rushing to do! Plus, you can now choose to tint all colours in an active colour scheme using the accent colour derived from your wallpaper. It sounds fussy but this will give your desktop a cohesive, consistent vibe as windows are tonally in-tune. You can choose how much tint gets applied, and save your settings as a distinct colour scheme. 2. Floating Panel KDE Plasma is the ruling monarch of customisation and in Plasma 5.25 its royal powers further by introducing a new Floating Panel option. This (as the name may very well tell you) inserts a margin all the way around the panel, lifting it off and away from the screen boundaries. The corners of floating panels are subtly rounded to effect a softer, more tactile look. You can also choose whether a floating panel is transparent or opaque to hone the look you want. Floating panels also animate back to a regular panel whenever you maximise an application window. This animation is smooth and retains the placing of panel items so the point targets remain where your mind anticipates them. To enable floating panels in KDE Plasma 5.25 just right-click the panel, select Enter Edit Mode, followed by More Options, and then select Floating. Simple! 3. Improved Workspace Switching Managing windows and moving between workspaces is easier in KDE Plasma thanks to the Overview effect. This shows open windows, virtual desktops (or workspaces, if you prefer that term). KDE’s new Overview is reminiscent of Mission Control in macOS, but far more features: you can search for apps, documents, browser tabs, access all of the the features of KRunner and the Application Launcher, and remove, add and rename virtual desktops with ease. To open the Overview in KDE Plasma 5.25 press super + w or, on a multi-touch-enabled touchpad, do a four finger pinch. Plus, the Present Windows and Desktop Grid effects have been rewritten from scratch in this release and now share much of their code with the new Overview. Desktop grid in particular is a more dynamic way to get an overview of workspaces, making it an ideal alternative to the overview. 4. 1:1 touch gestures 5.
