In this video from Partzilla.com, John talks to you about how to choose the right fork oil for your motorcycle. But to understand how different fork oils impact your motorcycle, we’ll start by guiding you through what is going on in your fork. The right motorcycle fork oil viscosity will vary depending on how and where you ride. The suspension oil viscosity index will give you clues about the weight of the oil and how it will behave across temperature ranges. Two oils, with the same weight but different viscosity indexes, will behave a little differently from each other at the beginning of the ride and then begin to differ substantially as you build heat into the fork. If you’re moving from the factory recommendation on your fork oil, make small moves. Minor changes can have a big impact, and moving to an oil that’s far off from the manufacturer’s recommendation might not match the application for which the bike was intended. How I've made the forks on my Yamaha T7 much more resistant to bottoming out. Only change the oil in your forks if you have some idea what you're doing, otherwise take your bike to a professional suspension mechanic. I claim zero responsibility if you try it yourself and stuff it up. My SV650 Y was feeling like a pogo stick to ride and difficult to keep on line. I replaced the rear shock with a YSS shock, which is really good. I wanted to upgrade the fork oil to something thicker. 15w was widely recommended, so I tried that, but found it similar to stock. I noticed that the viscosity of the oil mostly affected the rebound damping, so decided to try 20w - and it's vastly improved the handling.
