This time we test the Nankang AR-1s in our K20-swapped Honda S2000 in what is probably Europe's coolest F1 track, Spa-Francorchamps. The shorter and more techincal GP circuit allow us to have a more clear conclusion on how we feel about the AR-1s. To make it more interesting we actually test them versus the quite popular Toyo R888. With the only difference being the swap from Toyo R888 to Nankang AR-1 we find almost 4 seconds out of Kostas' previous personal best in what is a ~3 min track! This for OLH is more than enough to call the AR-1 not just a good budget semi but a very good option no matter the price tag. We will eventually come back and post some Nordschleife lap times but for comparison purposes this is as 'clinical' as it gets without a huge budget, multiple sets of wheels and booking the whole track for yourself. On top of the improvement in lap times driver's feedback was very positive. Stiffer sidewalls, better steering feel, better braking performance and more grip in total to top it all off. * Excuse us for the sound problems. Last video of the year and all. Car moved to a narrower square tire setup for Nankang, compared to the wider rear/narrower front Toyos. (That technically would be an advantage for the Toyos) * Absolute time difference is not always relevant and not our key way to decide how we feel about a tire. However when it is so big it's safe to say that AR-1s are faster than R888, at least in this application.

Kush painstakingly captured the sweet breakup of AR-1’s beefy tubes being driven into the dirt, then added more than a half dozen significant UI and functional enhancements. The resulting emulation is every bit as chunky as the original, and 10x more flexible.
The Nankang AR1 tires measures GT3 245/35/20 305/30/20 In reality the imprint is smaller than the competitors ones, it remains a little bit stricter and more sliding/flowing marking higher maximum speeds. The tire carcass is very rigid, more than the competitor ones. The weight of the tire itself is also more higher than the others. It’s not noisy in street and it doesn’t struggle to get in temperature oven when cold. I cut my head to the bull :-) by putting them first after Michelin Cup and Dunlop Race Max in the hot lap and I put them in direct comparison to the Pirelli Trofeo. Compared to the Pirelli’s the braking is less incisive; instead they have more grip traction during the curve exit. The side/lateral grip is very similar. Even if the Trofeo in support is still more performing. The very rigid carcass gives an excellent feeling. The problem of these tires is that to understand them I had to reduce the pressure considerably, they ideally turn between 1,75 and 1,9 pressure, besides they are completely unmanageable. In a couple of laps they arrive to 2,5 starting from 1,9. To get the best you have to go out at 1,7 of pressure, than the 2/3 next laps give a big performance, maybe slightly lower than the Trofeo. I tried this procedure many times and they never reduce. Consumption is low and very homogeneous. The tire is very directional and doesn’t tend to drag on. Nowadays I’m the only one who test the tires on the GT3. The temperature outside didn’t go over 9 degrees. It rests the unknown about the behavior in hot temperatures. I think I’ll try them in Monza too. Keep in touch
We threw a set of 225/40/18 Nankang AR1 Track tires with a old set of Golf GTi wheels (18x7.5 +51) on our Audi S3 and hit the track. They felt great right out of the pits and the cold grip would also make them a great autoctoss tire. No lap times to compare as we haven’t had the S3 at this track before. Testing a new Nankang AR1 235/40/17 vs somewhat worn but reasonably capable Yokohama Advan AD08R 205/45/17 (stock size) on a miata ND. Shaving off a full second, from 44.86 to 43.86 (with consistent laps on both). With the AR1 I was able to hold another 2 kph in the corners and sustain that in the straights as I could get on the gas earlier on corner exit. This +2kph along the entire lap equates to a full second here. Tests were done two weeks apart with similar conditions. All data from AiM Solo 2.

In reality, the slicks were around a second and a half quicker per lap on this particular day, but finding proper clear laps is often tricky on a day like this and the temporary chicane doesn't help either.
