V2H (Vehicle 2 Home) is a relatively new up and coming way to power your home, instead of pulling from the national grid during high demand, peak and expensive times! It has actually been around for more than 10 years already, but only now is becoming a topic more are interested in given the rapid rise in energy prices across Europe. The story of the Nissan LEAF and the disaster of Fukushima is where the whole concept of V2G (Vehicle 2 Grid) and V2H were first created and many years later, we're starting to see V2G and V2H become more popular among the many who want to make their EV work harder for them, not only when they are driving but also when the vehicle is sat on the driveway doing nothing! V2G or V2H allows use of any 2013+ Japanese electric car fitted (Nissan or Mitsubishi) with a CHAdeMO charger connector to charge up overnight, enjoying cheaper unit prices with utility providers who offer an off peak tariff and then time shift throughout the day by pulling from the car instead of the national grid when unit prices are high! Electric Car Powers Garage Off-Grid | DIY V2H w/ CHAdeMO


Well, I've officially done it. A solid test of powering my entire garage, off-grid, from a ten-year-old econo-beater electric car! I have a 3D printed CHAdeMO connector drawing power from my 2012 Mitsubishi iMiev. The power goes through a pair of fuses, through a pre-charge resistor, and finally into the PV inputs of the Solar City H6 Hybrid Inverter, which is running in an off-grid mode. From there, AC power goes out through a NEMA L14-30 twist-lock connection, over a generator cable, and into a generator power inlet attached to my breaker panel. That then feeds the entire panel, and thus everything in my garage. 10 Gauge, 4 Conductor, 20 foot long Generator Cable: 🤍 Generator Power Inlet Box: 🤍 I had no problem drawing 2,000 watts or more to run the lights, battery chargers, and even an electric space heater. (I could have drawn more, but the hardware store had none of the 30A breakers that fit my panel, so I'm just using an existing 15A breaker for the moment.) The important thing to remember is to be DISCONNECTED from the grid while powering the garage from the car. In this case, the easy way to do it was just turning off the 100A input breaker. Unfortunately, this is a "Main Lug Only" panel - meaning that there's not a separate main breaker away from the rest. (This is common on sub-panels, such as the one in my garage.) Main lug panels are not designed for the simple "Generator Interlock" kits available from the big box home improvement store. I might end up 3D printing a bracket that locks together the main breaker and the Generator Input breaker so that only one or the other can ever be on. Alternatively, I'd still like to also test feeding power back to the house main panel, but I'm just not sure of the best way to design an interlock for that. I'm also experimenting with turning ON my grid-tie micro-inverters with the car powering the garage. It looked like as long as I had loads heavier that what the inverters would produce, they WOULD sync to the H6 inverter and activate after the 5 minute disconnect timer. Micro-inverters will automatically disconnect if the grid signal is out of spec. It appears that if there isn't a heavy enough load for the power the inverters are making, it will push up the voltage, until it's out of spec, and the inverters will kick out. My inverters are on three separate breakers in the combiner box, and basically come together as 2, 8, and 16 amp circuits. I ran a few tests with the sun providing either 2 or 10 amps of current and that much current WAS subtracted from how much the H6 inverter was providing. Still, MANUALLY balancing loads to solar production would be a pain. I think it might be easiest to simply provide a HEAVY load to the system, so that the solar micro-inverters never make too much. A good heavy load would be charging an electric car. So, I gave it a try - I charged one electric car from the other (through the inverter and an AC EVSE.) And it worked! I'll have to experiment with it some more. Ideally, I'd like to use the solar panels to charge the car that I'm drawing power from in the first place. No, that's not a perpetual motion machine - the additional energy input is from the solar panels. I just plugged in my 16A EVSE, and it fired right up! 🤍 That's it for now, but this is becoming a pretty exciting project. I still have a bunch of details to work on, including properly buttoning-up the DC balance of system components, adding a voltmeter display, and a whole bunch of clean-up and making it look safe and professional. V2H is a world leader in innovative vertical-to-horizontal jetting technologies that deliver lower well capex and opex costs and higher productivity and recoverability to the oil and gas industry. Charging an Electric Car from another Electric Car! | DIY V2H | Solar


I figured out how to charge an electric car from ANOTHER electric car! CLICK SHOW MORE! I've been experimenting with drawing power out through my car's CHAdeMO fast charge port and running it through a solar inverter. I can then send that power into my garage breaker panel (while disconnected from the grid.) As long as the electrical LOAD is higher than the power my micro-inverters can create, the solar can be on and will reduce the amount of AC power that the off-grid solar inverter needs to create. In this case, it was late in the day, and my solar could produce around 3,000 watts. My older EV only charges at about 3,300. I was able to create a "micro-grid" with the Solar City H6 inverter, power up the micro-inverters, and have the solar provide MOST of the power for charging! This shows how to use a manual transfer switch to connect a Setec V2H unit to power critical loads in a home. The Setec unit is design to only power loads and is not meant to be interconnected to the home. By using a transfer switch, the EV is operating as a generator in a Vehicle to Load (V2L) configuration, not as an interconnected system. This is not a recommended installation or use. Never connect anything directly to the panel. The transfer switch was installed by licensed electricians and permitted - you should too.

3D Printed CHAdeMO Connector for Vehicle To Home Power Backup (V2H)


Video slideshow working on 3D Printed Vehicle to Home project. 🤍 Click SHOW MORE! I used an existing file from Thingiverse and had a friend 3D print it for me. 🤍 This then uses 9MM pins for the main power and some small electronics pins for signals. I actually tried two different methods for making the main power pins. On one, I used 5/16" copper rod slid INSIDE a 9MM brass tube and soldered in place. That gives me a brass instead of copper surface at the electrical connection surface. I also tried a solid 9MM copper rod. On that, I electro-plated it with nickel for corrosion resistance. Both seem to insert nicely into the CHAdeMO port on the car. I think the copper with nickel-plating looks nice and it was easier to make than the brass-sheathed pin. The signal pins were a little tricky, as I needed to solder a 1/16th" electronics pin onto the end of an 1/8" piece of brass rod. The parts are small, and my eyes and hands aren't what they once were (especially since a vehicular collision a couple years ago!) I'm just using ANALOG signals to activate the CHAdeMO port. Inside the car, it's easy to access the 12V relay which sends a signal to the battery pack to port contactors. In series with that, the CHAdeMO DC Fast Charger would send a signal so that both the car AND the charger are sending a signal to close the circuit and send power to the CHAdeMO port. But again, it's actually an analog signal that does it. By grounding the bottom-most signal pin on the CHAdeMO handle, it completes the circuit on the DCFC side. For now, I simply made a jumper for the 12V relay connection in the car. Later, I'll connect that up with a switch. The car needs to be ON to send power to it, so even with the jumper in place, the car key is required and acts as a switch. A micro-switch in the handle is also wired in series with the car relay and the grounding of the bottom pin of the handle so that pressing the button to unlock the handle from the car deactivates the contactors. Of course, without the handle finished up, closed, and completely electrically sealed, I am NOT putting my hand anywhere near 300VDC+! For testing, I simply inserted the CHAdeoMO handle with a volt-meter plugged in to it, then turned on power to the car at the key, observed the voltage shown on the meter, and then turned the car back off. Before any more work on this project, I need some high-voltage gloves, a 500VDC rated fuse, some 600V rated cable, and a few other things to be able to able to work on this safely. To convert the high voltage DC to usable home AC power, I'm considering using a Delta H6 solar inverter. V2H - Batterie Li-Ion de la Prius Prime qui a alimenté ma maison durant 7:45


Vehicle-To-Home en biénergie haut tarif. La Prius Prime a été chargée à bas tarif DT de 0,0437$/kWh et déchargée pour alimenter le panneau d'urgence (pour génératrice) de la maison durant le haut tarif DT de 0,2550$/kWh. Un onduleur 3 kW alimentant fournaise, réfrigérateur, congélateur pendant une durée 7h45 avec l'énergie de la Prius Prime. Démarrage à 20h00 avec batterie Li-Ion de la Prius Prime 100% et arrêt de la Prius Prime à 3h45 am avec batterie Li-Ion à 17%. Prius Prime demeurée à On (Ready) en mode EV de 20h00 à 3h45 am avec chauffage OFF avec température extérieure descendue à -15°C. Dans cette vidéo, une fois à 17% à 3h45, découplage de la Prius Prime et tranfert de la charge vers 2 batterries acide-plomb 95 Ah pour ajouter une durée de 3h10 sur onduleur. Total 10h55 sur onduleur. Si le découplage n'avait pas été effectué, la batterie Li-Ion serait descendue à 0% vers 5h15 am et le moteur à essence aurait alors démarré. Fonction qui peut être utile d'ailleurs pour prechauffer le moteur les jours de semaine lors de grand froid ou s'il y a une panne prolongée d'Hydro-Québec.

V2H discharging + charging at the same time with a Nissan LEAF using a 3kW Setec unit

Several people have asked if the Nissan LEAF can charge at the same time it is discharging, effectively getting around the need for a bidirectional inverter. This video shows, that no, you cannot be in Vehicle to Home (V2H) or Vehicle to Load (V2L) mode at the same time as charging. The vehicle and equipment will shut down. The Setec unit can only be used for discharging, and the vehicle can only charge or discharge at one time.
